Purpose

Biliary stent insertion is a procedure to allow drainage of bile into the intestine, which is the normal route, by inserting a stent made of plastic or metal into the narrowed area after accessing the biliary tract in the liver through the skin and parenchyma of the liver

A disease in which all or part of the biliary duct is obstructed by gallstones or tumors, causing severe jaundice

Problems

  • Perforation due to detachment of the stent and high rate of restenosis
  • Plastic stent : It has a shorter lifespan than a metal stent, so it needs to be replaced every 3 months, which is the clogging period (replacement rate: 45%)
  • Metal stent : Cannot be removed oncethe stent is closed
